Lanolin (Lanolin) is a light yellow or brownish-yellow ointment; it is sticky and slippery; it smells weak and peculiar. It is easily soluble in chloroform or ether, soluble in hot ethanol, and very slightly soluble in ethanol. Lanolin is a natural substance secreted by the sebaceous glands of sheep. The main component is esters produced by sterols, fatty alcohols and triterpene alcohols and approximately the same amount of fatty acids, accounting for about 95%, and it also contains free alcohol 4%. , And a small amount of free fatty acids and hydrocarbons. White or light yellow to dark brown creamy translucent body, smelly; the relative density of anhydrous is 0.946. The softening point is 38~44℃. Acid value < 1.0mgKOH/g. The saponification value is 92~106mgKOH/g. The iodine value is about 18~36mgKOH/g. Mainly higher alcohols and esters,
The water-soluble lanolin contains about 94% ester, 4% free alcohol, 1% free acid, and 1% hydrocarbon. Among the esters, non-hydroxy esters account for about 60%, and hydroxy esters account for about 40% (mainly α-hydroxy). The flash point is 276°C. Easily soluble in ether, toluene, chloroform, acetone, petroleum ether, slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble in water, but can absorb water equivalent to twice its own weight. Lanolin is chemically stable and has good adhesion to metal surfaces.
The main drug can be quickly absorbed by mucous membranes and skin, has adhesion, stable properties, and can absorb water, not easy to rancidity. It is an excellent ointment base and emulsifier for water-in-oil emulsions. The dosage is 5%. Due to its high viscosity and discomfort when applied locally, it is not suitable to be used as a substrate alone. It is often used in combination with petroleum jelly and can increase the water absorption and penetration of petroleum jelly.
Cosmetic grade lanolin can be used in cold cream, anti-wrinkle cream, anti-cracking cream, shampoo, conditioner, hair cream, lipstick and high-grade soap. Often used as a water-in-oil emulsifier, it is an excellent moisturizing substance. It can soften and restore dry or rough skin due to lack of natural moisture. It maintains the usual moisture content of the skin by delaying, rather than completely preventing moisture from penetrating through the epidermal layer.
