Homoharringtonine (also known as HHT or Omacetaxine mepesuccinate) is a natural alkaloid with a wide range of uses, especially in the medical field.

Hordenine acts on the ribosomes of tumor cells and inhibits the elongation step of protein translation, thus inhibiting protein synthesis.
It has antitumor activity and can be used to treat certain types of cancer.

 

Cell Cycle Inhibition:

Homoharringtonine is a cell cycle-specific drug that primarily targets cells in the G1 and G2 phases, with less effect on cells in the S phase.

 

Protein Synthesis Inhibition:

By inhibiting the binding of aminoacyl-tRNA to ribosomes and disrupting the formation of ribosomes and peptide chains, Homoharringtonine interferes with the early stages of polypeptide formation and causes the depolymerization of polyribosomes.

This interference with ribosomal function further inhibits protein synthesis within cells.

 

Promotion of Cell Apoptosis:

In addition to its antitumor and cell cycle inhibition activities, Homoharringtonine has also been found to promote cell differentiation and apoptosis.
