Citalopram Hydrobromide is an antidepressant drug of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class. It has the U.S.Food and Drug Administration approval to treat major depression, which it received in 1998, and is prescribed off-label for other conditions. In Australia, the UK, Germany, Portugal, Poland, and most European countries, it is licensed for depressive episodes and panic disorder with or without agoraphobia. In Spain, it is also used for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The second generation of antidepressants have a strong specific inhibitory effect on serotonin reabsorption.

There are mainly the following symptoms: irritability, fatigue, inattention, excitement, muscle tension, sleep disturbances. Citalopram HBr is a novel antidepressant derivative of phthalic acid, which has opposite selectivity for the reabsorption of 5-ht in similar drugs.

Citalopram HBr can effectively inhibit the absorption of 5-HT, but has little effect on the absorption of dopamine and norepinephrine. Citalopram HBr has weak or almost zero affinity for alkali, histamine and 5-HT receptors.

The drug has both endogenous and non-endogenous effects, does not affect the heart conduction system and blood pressure, does not damage cognitive function and psychomotor, and does not enhance the inhibitory function produced by ethanol.
