World's Largest Chess Piece Record

A French chess club has created a chess piece that stands 6.28 meters tall and weighs nearly 4.2 tons, bigger than the existing Guinness World Record. The club plans to apply for the piece in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the world's largest chess piece.

The club is called The Soteron Chess Club in the city of Soteron in western France. To celebrate a chess tournament in Soteron, the club used more than 700 pieces of wood and spent more than 700 hours making the king pieces, UNITED Press International reported Tuesday.

Photos shared by the French Chess Federation on Twitter show the four men standing side by side on the base of the pieces, not looking cramped.

According to the Guinness World Records website, the current world record is for a chess king, nearly 6.1 meters tall with a base diameter of about 2.8 meters, made of African saberi wood in the United States in April 2018. It is 53 times the size of a standard King piece.
