Nicotinamide mononucleotide, also known as β-nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), is a synthetic substrate for coenzyme I. NMN has also been used in anti-ageing research. Studies have shown that β-NMN can also play a regulatory role on insulin secretion and has an effect on mRNA expression levels. β-NMN has a wide range of applications in medical therapy. β-Nicotinamide mononucleotide is a product of the extracellular nicotinamide phosphate ribosyltransferase (eNAMPT) reaction and a key NAD+ intermediate. It improves glucose tolerance by restoring NAD+ levels in HFD-induced T2D mice. It also enhances hepatic insulin sensitivity and restores gene expression associated with oxidative stress, inflammatory responses and circadian rhythms, in part through SIRT1 activation.
