Description
Chemical Aproperties and Forms
Apremilast is a phthalimide derivative.
It is a white to light yellow, non-hygroscopic powder.
It is virtually insoluble in water and buffer solutions over a wide pH range, but is soluble in lipophilic solvents such as acetone, acetonitrile, butanone, dichloromethane and tetrahydrofuran.
Apharmacological Actions
Apremilast reduces inflammatory mediators released by inflammatory cells, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin 17, and interleukin 23, and up-regulates anti-inflammatory interleukin 10, mainly by inhibiting PDE4, thus achieving a reduction in inflammation.
Apremilast is mainly used to treat the following conditions:
Active psoriatic arthritis:
by reducing the inflammation associated with arthritis, it helps to reduce joint pain and swelling and improve joint function in patients.
Plaque psoriasis:
by modulating multiple biological pathways, including cytokines, it reduces the inflammatory response, thereby reducing flare-ups of psoriasis symptoms.
Other inflammatory diseases:
such as mouth ulcers and Behçet's disease, Apremilast has also shown some therapeutic effects.
